Microsoft Copilot is a range of features supported by AI integrated into Microsoft's applications and services. The basic feature available to all employees and students is Copilot Chat, which offers a service similar to ChatGPT.

It is a bit confusing that Microsoft Copilot is a completely different service if you log in with a personal Microsoft account or use the “Microsoft Copilot” app. The private service is otherwise managed from copilot.microsoft.com, but here too you will be redirected to Copilot Chat if you log in with your UiB account. Note that the private service can only process UiB's green data.

Copilot Chat

Copilot Chat allows you to have a conversation with Microsoft's AI assistant. This is based on the same AI technology as OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The assistant has access to search for sources from the Internet and can thus find updated information on various topics.

Copilot Chat for employees and students is available at m365.cloud.microsoft/chat/. The service is approved to process green and yellow data at UiB.

There are many entry points that all take you to the same interface. You also get here if you press the Copilot button in Teams, Outlook, on bing.com. You get here by clicking the Chat button in the Office 365 portal.

Microsoft 365 Copilot (app)

This is a separate application available for Windows, iOS, and Android. The app is not yet available for macOS.

The Windows app displays the same interface as m365.cloud.microsoft shows in a web browser.

Microsoft 365 Copilot (license)

This is a separate license that can be assigned to employees who benefit from extra AI services. This is a relatively expensive license, and the functionality offered is currently being tested in a dedicated project at UiB.

With the Microsoft 365 Copilot license, you get a dedicated tab in the Copilot Chat interface labeled "Work," where you can explore documents and communications you have access to from your UiB account. The "Web" tab is a variant of the chat that works the same way as for those who do not have the license.

You get access to the chat agents "Analyst" and "Researcher." This provides improved results in data analysis and offers detailed reports by taking more time to find all sources and cross-check them.

Office apps such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint also get a chat interface on the side where you can perform functions on the current document by having a conversation with the AI.

You get access to Copilot Notebooks, which is Microsoft’s answer to Google’s NotebookLM. Here you can create collections of information that you can then have conversations with the AI about. You can also have the AI create a podcast between two people based on the information.

The license also removes the limit on how many images can be generated in Copilot Chat per user per day.

Microsoft Copilot (app)

This is a separate application available for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. This is an app intended only for the consumer market. It is not possible to log in with a UiB account – only private Microsoft accounts can be used. If you still use this app with UiB information, you must limit yourself to information classified as green.

Microsoft Copilot Pro (license)

This is a license marketed toward the consumer market and is not available to us at UiB. The functionality corresponds to what is enabled with the Microsoft 365 Copilot license at UiB.
